Dataset: Confined Great Artesian Basin Aquifer - PED

Description

Abstract

This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.

It describes areas of Great Artesian Basin (JK) Aquifer to be interpreted as confined, minus a few outliers.

Purpose

To represent the confined areas of the Great Artesian Basin minus a few outliers, to aid in display clarity.

Dataset History

The original layer called SANT_Extent_Confined_Aquifer_june2012.shp was developed along with a number of data sets as part of the Australian Government funded research program entitled "Allocating Water and Maintaining Springs in the GAB". http://archive.nwc.gov.au/library/topic/groundwater/allocating-water-and-maintaining-springs-in-the-great-artesian-basin. A number of small "outliers" or zones of confined GAB groundwater condition separate from the main zone were removed from the original layer to aid clarity to the map by comparing the top of JK aquifer horizon (RL mAHD) to that of the potentiometric surface of groundwater for the same aquifer (RL mAHD). Where the two were equal, this was interpreted to be the boundary between unconfined and confined groundwater conditions within the JK Aquifer. The line displayed is smoothed to improve display. The specific datafiles used to develop this layer include:
