Dataset: Galilee Groundwater Model, hydrogeological formation recharge (Outcrop) extents v01

Description

Abstract

This dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme. The parent datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.

This dataset shows the outcrop extent of each hydrogeological formation in the Galilee Basin subregion. Outcrop extents are the area of the hydrogeological formations which appear at the surface of the earth. These outcrop extents are simplified to fill the entire extent of the Galilee groundwater model. These boundaries, therefore, disregard alluvium and unconsolidated surface geology and assume the formation closest to the surface is an outcrop.

Purpose

Provides recharge extent boundaries for each hydrogeological formation to be used to estimate recharge volumes for input into the Galilee Basin subregion groundwater model

Dataset History

Hydrogeolgical formations within the Galilee Basin subregion exist in the following order, from top to bottom:

Winton Mackunda

Allaru Toolebuc Wallumbilla

Wyandra Cadna-Owie Hooray

Westbourne Adori Birkhead

Hutton Boxvale Precipice

Moolyember

Clematis Warang

Rewan

Bandanna

Joe Joe Group

Using the formation extent dataset - Galilee Groundwater Model, Hydrogeological Formation Extents v01 (GUID: 5afbf7f1-1ee0-444b-9f77-dbad8d8de95b), each formation had the overlying formations clipped from it, using the clip tool in the ArcMap Editor toolbar. This was verified was correctness using the QLD surface geology dataset - QLD Geological Digital Data - QLD Geology, Structural Framework, November 2012 (GUID: a841bdfd-376c-4c7b-afd4-e92aba991f06)

For example, the Wyandra/Cadna-Owie/Hooray Recharge Extent boundary was created by taking its hydrogeological formation extent and clipping (discarding) the extents of the Allaru/Toolebuc/Wallumbilla and Winton/Mackunda hydrogeological formation extents from it. The Qld surface geology dataset was used to verify that the Wyandra/Cadna-Owie/Hooray surface geology appeared within the simplified recharge extent.
