Dataset: Traralgon Formation Coal Extent

Description

Abstract

The dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme. It was derived from isopachs supplied by the Victorian Department of State Development, Business and Innovation (DSDBI) in October, 2014 (GUID: 05966613-8da7-4124-af6d-964e1210b6ba). You can find a link to the parent datasets in the Lineage Field in this metadata statement. The History Field in this metadata statement describes how this dataset was derived.

This dataset shows the extent of the Traralgon FormationT0 and T1 coal seams.

Purpose

Coal seams within the Traralgon Formation are considered to behave as aquitards, limiting vertical connection between the Traralgon (Latrobe Group) aquifer and overlying aquifers. The spatial extent of these coal seams was used to map the regions where vertical hydraulic connection may be interrupted in this way.

Dataset History

The extent of the isopachs in the layers 'TI_isochrom_Hodgate(2000).shp' and 'T2_isochrom_Holdgate(2000).shp' in the dataset (GUID: 05966613-8da7-4124-af6d-964e1210b6ba) were digitised in ESRI ArcMap 10.2 at 1:100,000 scale.

The source isopachs were supplied by DSDBI in October, 2014. These isopachs were digitised by DSDBI from Figures 5 and 6 of Holdgate, G. R.,M. W. Wallace,S. J. Gallagher and D. Taylor (2000). "A review of the Traralgon Formation in the Gippsland Basin - a world class brown coal resource." International Journal of Coal Geology45(1): 55-84.
