Dataset: Vegetation height for Australia (Simard)

Description

Abstract

This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied. Data was downloaded from http://lidarradar.jpl.nasa.gov/MAPS/Simard_Pinto_3DGlobalVeg_JGR.tif.gz

Vegetation height was measured using a satellite based light detection and ranging (lidar) system between 20 May 2005 to 23 June 2005 using the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) aboard ICESat (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite). Using a regression tree approach to model canopy height, Simard et al. (2011) were able to globally model overstorey vegetation height at 1 km spatial resolution with a vertical RMSE of 4.4 m and coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.7 when compared against 59 flux-tower field observations globally. The dataset covers the whole of Australia.

The data were downloaded from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory website here: http://lidarradar.jpl.nasa.gov/MAPS/Simard_Pinto_3DGlobalVeg_JGR.tif.gz

Data covering the Australian continent was extracted and converted to a ArcGIS raster using the bounding coordinates (GCS_WGS_1984):

Latitude (min): -43.6369999991

Longitude (min): 112.921

Latitude (max): -10.0620134291

Longitude (max): 153.64598371
