Dataset: Streamflow characteristics and base flow data for the Gloucester subregion

Description

Abstract

The dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from NSW Streamflow data. The source dataset is identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.

This dataset include six unified 6-category daily streamflow files, six base flow files, two xlsx files, and four scripts for generating intermediate dataset and plotting.

Each unified 6-category daily streamflow file was generated using the MATLAB script "Streamflow_QA_QC.m". The six categories are good, fair, poor, unverified, missing, and non-conformed.

Each daily base flow file was generated using the MATLAB script "Baseflow_characteristics.m".

Annual and monthly streamflow characteristics data were generated using the MATLAB script "Streamflow_characteristics.m".

Data gaps were calculated using the MATLAB script "Streamflow_QA_QC_Gap_Statistics.m'.

The xlsx file "BA-Excel-Gloucester_v02.xlsx" was used to plot monthly streamflow distribution (Figures 28-29 in the context statement), annual flow time series (Figures 30-31 in the context statement) and base flow index time series (Figures 32-33 in the context statement).

The xlsx file "Gap_Stastical.xlsx" summaries streamflow data gaps for the six gauges.

Dataset History

The New South Wales Office of Water (NOW) provides to the Bureau of Meteorology a copy of their hydstra surface water database. The last extract was received in July 2013.

Data was extracted from the Hydstra format to .csv files for surface water sites within the Gloucester sub-region as requested by the Gloucester project team.

Quality codes have been included.

Where surface water quality data is available, this is included on a separate tab for each gauging station

The intermediate data was generated using the MATLAB scripts (these are stored within the data set) and was used to plot streamflow characteristics, i.e. monthly streamflow distribution, annual streamlfow time series, and baseflow index time series.
